TOKYO'S FATALISM
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Courage in the Face of Disaster
Many foreigners have fled Tokyo. But the Japanese are facing the ongoing
threat posed by the Fukushima nuclear power plant with a mixture of
concern and equanimity. Their faith in the country's ability to overcome
is unfazed.

Consumer Fears Could Add to Japan's Economic Challenges
With factories destroyed and ongoing power outages, Japan's economy is
in dire straits. Japanese companies may also face the challenge of

Germany's Dangerous New Foreign Policy Doctrine
With its abstention in the UN Security Council vote on Libya, Germany
has abandoned its strict alignment with the West, a basic tenet of
German foreign policy for decades. Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle's
new doctrine is a dangerous one. It would be disastrous for Germany's
Western partners began doubting Berlin's committment.

'Can Germans Trust Merkel's About-Face on Nuclear Power?'
Chancellor Angela Merkel says she has changed her mind about nuclear
power following the Fukushima accident, and now intends to speed up
plans to close down Germany's 17 reactors. Media commentators say she
has no option but to turn her back on nuclear power. But how credible is
her about-face?

A Palestinian Disappears in Ukraine
A Palestinian engineer vanishes from a train carriage in Ukraine -- and
reappears later in an Israeli jail. He's being held without charge. In
Western intelligence circles the suspicion is mounting that the man is a
Hamas insider with vital information.

Greens Inherit Billion-Euro Bomb
After the euphoria of their stunning election victory comes the reality
of government: The Greens and the SPD face billion-euro problems in
Baden-Württemberg. Withdrawing from the controversial Stuttgart 21
project would be vastly expensive, and the newly-nationalized energy
giant EnBW could also turn out to be a bottomless money pit.

Poles Invoke Chuck Norris to Defy Kaczynski Remembrance
Some Poles are tired of never-ending gestures of remembrance for Lech
Kaczynski, the president who died in a plane crash last year. Protesters
suspect his  brother Jaroslaw is exploiting the tragedy for political
gain, and have started to mock his monthly wreath-laying by
simultaneously celebrating the birthdays of US action movie stars.

Migrants from Africa, including the first refugees from Libya, once

the mainland.
