France Cuts Military. Will Only Handle Excursions Less Than 10,000 Troops
French Defence Budget: Fewer Troops, Better Equipment
Written by Hilary Barnes
When the French government prepared a
defence white paper in March, one of the kinder remarks was made by
Jean-Sylvestre Mongrenier, Research Fellow at the Thomas More Institute,
a Paris think tank, who said :
"This document announces another cut in France's
military ambitions, thus jeopardising its political status, its
effective power and its contribution to Europe."

Is it Time for the Next Way?
by Dan Kervick, New Economic Perspectives
Posted 02 August 2013 at New Economic Perspectives
The 2008 financial crisis has been oozing
slowly down the DC memory hole for some time now, as a series of
destructive and economy-crushing budget battles has taken center stage
in Washington. But the debate over outgoing Fed Chief Ben Bernanke's
successor has reignited a lot of the pain and outrage that the 2008
debacle caused. That debate, and the President's obtuse support for
Larry Summers, is also casting a very harsh light on the White House's
basic competence, its seemingly dim grasp of the causes of the financial
collapse, and its blase and corrupt attitudes toward the correct
response to it.
Gold Is Finally Ready to Launch
by Poly, Zentrader
Summary

Gold
appears to have wakened from what has been a very challenging 10 month
decline. Ever since last September's rally failed (bull trap) to take
out the all-time high set back in 2011, it has literally been straight
downhill for gold. But the signs of a trend change are everywhere now,
and this is evident technically in the charts and within the changing
composition of the Cycles. Be warned we are due a $50 pullback this
week towards a Daily Cycle Low. However beyond that, all indications
point to a substantial rally about to take hold. According to my Cycles
analysis, we're looking at a
10 week gold rally back to the $1,520-50 region.
The New York Times Paywall Is Paying Off
by Felix Richter, Statista.com
It's been a little more than two years
since the New York Times Company introduced the controversial metered
paywall for its online content. In the face of declining print revenues,
the company felt it had no choice but to stop giving away its content
for free.
Two years later, the New York Times and International Herald Tribune
have 699,000 paying digital subscribers, which is remarkable given the
reluctance of many people to pay for digital content. More importantly
though, the paywall appears to work on a monetary level as well.
