Juan Carlos, the king of Spain, plans to abdicate, according to the country’s prime minister. A new constitutional amendment will reportedly be proposed to allow for the abdication. Crown Prince Felipe is to become the new monarch.
Spain’s King Juan Carlos is abdicating after almost 40 years on the throne and his son Prince Felipe will succeed him, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Monday in a surprise announcement.
“His majesty, King Juan Carlos, has just communicated to me his will to give up the throne,” Rajoy said. “I’m convinced this is the best moment for change.”
Rajoy went on to say “his majesty would like to explain personally to the Spanish people later this morning” the reasons for his abdication.
The 76-year-old King has been troubled by chronic health problems over the past couple of years and his popularity has also taken a hit for the worse amid the financial crisis that has crippled Spain’s economy. The monarch was greeted with public fury after photos emerged of his elephant-shooting safari trip to Botswana in 2012, at the height of the financial downturn in Spain.
In addition, Juan Carlos’ daughter, Princess Cristina, and her husband Inaki Urdangarin, are currently being investigated on charges of corruption.
Describing Juan Carlos as a “tireless defender” of Spain’s interests, Rajoy said a special meeting of the Council of Ministries has been scheduled for Tuesday to deal with the Monarch’s abdication.
“He has been the best spokesman and has put forward the best image of the Kingdom of Spain throughout the world,” said Rajoy.

The world’s alleged first quantum computer has, according to scientists, managed to play host to an important quantum physics activity.
D-Wave, as the computer has been named, draws upon radical new physics to attack mathematical quandaries, and is alleged by the Canadian company’s executives to be the first practical quantum computer.
The quantum physics activity is called entanglement, which is necessary to bring qubits or information units in a quantum system in synchrony.
Google teamed up with NASA last August to obtain a D-Wave computer, which sports a unique computer chip based on tiny loops of niobium wire.
Referring to the quantum physics activity, which allegedly plays out in a D-Wave computer, Dr Colin Williams, director of business development at D-Wave, said, “…this is the largest demonstration of entanglement in any quantum, superconducting computing scheme so far.” “It’s a big achievement for the field.”
Though hailed as the world’s first commercially-available quantum computer system, D-Wave Systems and their approach have not been able to elude controversy, with quantum physics being theoretically billed as means of achieving incredible results.
“The original vision of the company was simple: build a commercially useful quantum computer as soon as possible,” Vern Brownell, D-Wave’s chief executive, has said.
“We just want to provide quantum computing resources to researchers and businesses around the world so they can solve really hard problems, better than they can today.”

Russian writer idaltae tweeted the following:
White House launches propaganda at troll level pic.twitter.com/S45vJokXN2
Because she didn’t say what search term she used to pull up that ad – and because we don’t live in Russia – it took some legwork to verify that this is real.
Specifically, we used Keyword Spy – a highly-regarded and widely-used resource in the SEO industry – to see if the White House had purchased keywords for Google using the domain name WhiteHouse.gov.
Indeed, we did find the ad using Keyword Spy:
Keyword Spy also told us the keywords which the White House purchased:

Telenor is a huge telecommunications company based in Norway, which provides telecom services in Eastern Europe, and has had a series of legal disputes regarding its sizable ownership stake in Russian and Ukrainian telecoms.
In other words, Telenor Russia is probably a popular Google search term in Russia and Ukraine. And the White House has purchased Google key words to troll Putin.

A new inquiry shows that over 500 abuse cases have been reported against former BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, including alleged molestation of psychiatric patients and victims as young as two.
The probe, published by National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) charity on Monday, showed that most of the victims were aged between 13 to 15.
“There’s no doubt that Savile is one of the most, if not the most, prolific sex offender that we at the NSPCC have ever come across,” said Peter Watt, the charity’s director of child protection.
“What you have is somebody who at his most prolific lost no opportunity to identify vulnerable victims and abuse them,” Watt added.
The charity also reported that Savile exploited his high-level contacts to receive access to vulnerable victims at high-security Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.
Police say they have received 16 reports of abuse by Savile inside the Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, located in Berkshire outside of London.
The BBC presenter frequently visited the high-security hospital as part of his charity work and was even given his own set of keys to the institution.
Hundreds of allegations of sex abuse and rape of minors became public following Savile’s death in 2011.
The large number of cases led to the setting up of the Operation Yewtree probe into indecent abuses surrounding the British entertainment industry. The investigation has resulted in the arrests of several high-profile figures, including singer Gary Glitter, radio presenter Stuart Hall, former TV producer Wilfred De’Ath and comedians Freddie Starr and Jim Davidson.

US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden
If Brazil were to offer political asylum to Edward Snowden, he would gladly accept. The whistleblower told Brazilian TV that he is certain that if he returned to the US he would be tried unfairly for revealing the NSA’s global spy program.
In an interview with Fantastico, a weekly program broadcast by Brazilian Globo News, Snowden opened up about his life in Russia and said he has no regrets over what he has done. The interview is thought to have been filmed two weeks ago when a selfie of Snowden posing with David Miranda, Laura Poitras and journalist Glen Greenwald appeared online.
“I felt it was my responsibility to go public,” he told Globo, referring to the classified data on US spy programs that he turned over to the press for publication. “I left the free press to do what it does best: help citizens to make an informed decision about what kind of society they want to live in.”
He told Brazilian TV he is happy and living in Russia is not as bad as people make it out to be. Snowden received temporary political asylum in Russia last August after the US government canceled his passport, effectively stranding the whistleblower in one of Moscow’s airports for over a month. Washington has filed for Snowden’s extradition and has formally charged him under the Espionage Act.
“It’s difficult being away from family and not being able to go home or be an active member of society,” said Snowden.
His temporary political asylum in Russia will expire in two months and the whistleblower admits he has no concrete plans for the future.
“My asylum here runs out in August. If Brazil were to offer me asylum, I would be more than happy to accept,” said Snowden, maintaining he had already filed an application for asylum last year. When told during the interview that the Brazilian government claims it never received an application for asylum, Snowden responded, “That’s news to me.”
“When I was in the [Moscow] airport, I sent applications to various countries. Brazil was one of them. It was an official application.”
For the time being, Snowden says he is taking one day at a time and is able to live a relatively normal life in Russia as he is not widely recognized when he goes out.
“People recognize me when I go to computer stores, but when I’m buying food or looking at magazines, no one recognizes me,” said Snowden, refraining from answering whether or not he wears a disguise when he goes out. When asked if he thinks the Russian government is keeping tabs on him, Snowden said there was probably some sort of surveillance program, but he had not noticed anything.
Snowden has been condemned as a criminal in the US for revealing the espionage antics of the National Security Agency. US Secretary of State John Kerry called the whistleblower a “coward” and a “traitor” last week and called on him to face justice in the US. Snowden, however, argues his actions were always in the best interests of the US.
“You cannot be a traitor unless you have changed your allegiance to an enemy state. My allegiance has not changed. I continue to work for the American government. I don’t want to destroy the government, I want to improve it, make it better.”
His leaked documents informed the public that the US government, in conjunction with European allies, gatherers and stores millions of pieces of metadata indiscriminately from regular citizens. In addition to monitoring ordinary people, the NSA also bugged the personal communications of high-ranking businessmen and world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
