The current state of freedom of expression in Azerbaijan is alarming, as the cycle of violence against journalists and impunity for their attackers continues; journalists, bloggers, human rights defenders and political and civic activists face increasing pressure, harassment and interference from the authorities; and many who express opinions critical of the authorities – whether through traditional media, online, or by taking to the streets in protest – find themselves imprisoned or otherwise targeted in retaliation.  Read more >

ICCPR Anniversary: Opportunity for Protection of Freedom of Speech

On the occasion of the 36th anniversary of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights entering into force, ARTICLE 19 calls for Burma, Bhutan, China, Cuba, Malaysia, Qatar, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates to ratify of the Covenant and guarantee the protection of the rights enshrined in it on their territories, especially the right to freedom of expression. Read more >
