System Tests Afghan Graduates' Resistance To Radicalism
Despite inroads, many say the effort to offer educational opportunity to young Afghans hasn't met expectations. Worse, its harshest critics warn that the system for admission to university risks becoming a breeding ground for extremists. More The Global Heritage Fund recently released a list of Asia's 10 most significant archaeological and heritage sites that are under threat, including sites in two of RFE/RL's broadcast countries -- Afghanistan and Pakistan. The sites are under threat, Global Heritage says, due to factors such as development pressures, unsustainable tourism, insufficient management, looting, and war and conflict. More Dogfighting, although illegal, has long been a lucrative and popular sport in Afghanistan. But the blood sport is being given a tight leash as opponents call on authorities to enforce animal-protection laws. More In a new report, the U.S. State Department calls last year’s uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa “inspirational," with citizens in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, Yemen, and Syria standing up and demanding their universal rights, greater economic opportunity, and participation in their countries’ political future. More Amnesty International says courage shown by rights protesters during the past year has been matched by an "endemic failure of leadership" from local and international authorities.
