Dagestani journalist Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev was shot dead outside his
home this morning, six months after a previous attempt on his life.
ARTICLE 19 is saddened that despite widespread warnings regarding his
safety, the authorities failed to properly protect him.

Kazakhstan: Sentences for four attackers on journalist Lukpan Akhmediyarov welcome, but mastermind remains at large
ARTICLE 19 welcomes yesterdays’ court decision to sentence four men to
lengthy prison sentences for attacking Kazakh journalist Lukpan
Akhmediyarov with a knife and shotgun in April 2011. However, despite
having established that the attack was ordered, police did not identify
the mastermind behind the attack and the authorities failed to recognise
that this was not an ordinary crime, but a crime against free
expression.

The Gambia: New internet law furthers government crackdown on free expression
ARTICLE 19 condemns Gambia’s adoption of a law which severely restricts
the right to freedom of expression on the internet, criminalising online
speech. The newly adopted law is the latest attempt by the Gambian
authorities to stifle dissent in a country that already has some of the
harshest laws on the right to freedom of expression in Africa.
