Scientists have revealed new evidence of space wind, confirming a theory proposed 20 years ago. ‘Plasmaspheric wind’ is an elusive phenomenon and its existence helps scientists understand how the atmosphere protects us from violent solar winds.
Proof of space wind was uncovered in a study in European Geosciences Union journal Annales Geophysicae. The so-called ‘plasmaspheric wind’ is actually created by the Earth. Essentially, an imbalance between centrifugal and pressure forces and gravitational pull causes the steady flow of ionized particles from inside the atmosphere to the magnetosphere.
The magnetosphere is the region of space surrounding the earth that is governed by the planet’s magnetic field.
“After long scrutiny of the data, there it was, a slow but steady wind, releasing about 1 kg of plasma every second into the outer magnetosphere: this corresponds to almost 90 tons every day,” said Dr Iannis Dandouras, author of the study. He added the discovery was “one of the nicest surprises I’ve ever had.”
From the data, Dandourus calculated that the winds carry plasma (superheated gas) a day from the lower atmosphere into the magnetosphere at speeds of some 5,000 kilometers per hour.
Dandourus collated data from the EU Space Agency’s Cluster mission which was launched back in 2000. The Cluster mission is made up of four satellites that monitor the relationship between the Earth’s magnetosphere and solar winds.
The study will help scientists increase their understanding of how different layers of the Earth’s atmosphere interact with each other and protect the planet from solar winds. Furthermore, the findings indicate that other planets and celestial bodies that have similar atmospheres and rotations should also generate ‘plasmasphereic wind.’
The violent solar winds composed of charged particles that are ejected from the Sun would be quite deadly to Earth’s inhabitants if it were not for the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field. The two work in tandem to block x-rays, ultraviolet radiation and charged particles from reaching the planet’s surface.
“[The discovery] shows how interconnected different layers of the atmosphere are in protecting Earth from solar wind,” says Dr David Neudegg from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Ionospheric Prediction Service, which monitors space weather.
Researchers first proposed the idea of the existence of space wind flowing from the lower atmosphere into the magnetosphere 20 years ago, but were unable to prove their theories.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is detained by the police during a protest in central Moscow.
Russian prosecutors have demanded jail term for a top opposition leader suspected of embezzlement.
Alexei Navalny appeared before a court in the central Russian city of Kirov on Friday.
If convicted, the 37-year-old opposition leader could face a six-year jail term. In that case, he will effectively remain behind bars until after the next presidential election in 2018.
The prosecutors also asked the court to fine him about USD 30,000.
Navanly is accused of causing around USD 500,000 loss to the budget of the northern Kirov region in a deal while working for a liberal regional governor.
“I believe that the punishment proposed by the state is just and proportionate to the committed crime and the loss suffered by the state,” prosecutor Sergei Bogdanov told the court, adding, “It will also serve as a lesson to others who intend to commit this sort of crime.”
The opposition leader, however, denied the charges, saying they were politically motivated.
Navanly has led demonstrations against President Vladimir Putin and exposed the government’s alleged corruption.
He recently expressed his willingness to run for president.
The verdict is expected on July 18.

Over the years, the cause of death of one of the most famous Hollywood celebrities Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jean Mortenson) remained a mystery. Most of the evidence and testimony obtained during the investigation has been destroyed or lost. But now, nearly half a century later, the world saw the new details of the actress’ death.
On August 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe’s body was found in the bedroom of her home in Brentwood. According to the autopsy, the investigation came to the conclusion that the death was caused by an acute barbiturate poisoning. Monroe’s house was filled with listening devices, and surveillance was conducted on the day of her death. Witnesses said that a day earlier John and Bobby Kennedy came to visit her. There were screams and the sound of breaking glass, and a woman yelled: “Murderers! You are murderers! Are you satisfied now that she’s dead?” Then it was quiet. It is argued that it was Bobby Kennedy who silenced Monroe forever, strangling her with a pillow.
In fact, while over a hundred books have been written about the life and death of the woman who was likely the most notorious sex symbol of the 20th century, not one of them has been able to penetrate the mystery, or at least fill the gap about the last minutes of Monroe’s life.
According to eyewitnesses, August 4, 1962 was a pretty typical day in Marilyn’s life. Pat Newcomb, her press agent, recalled that Marilyn, apparently, did not sleep well and was a bit annoyed. Monroe spent most of her day with her psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, who noted a distinct change in the state of the actress, and explained it with Nembutal (a barbiturate). In the evening Joe DiMaggio visited her to discuss termination of his engagement and their possible reunion.
At 4:25 am on Sunday, August 5, the Los Angeles Police received a call. The caller introduced himself as Dr. Hyman Engelberg, Marilyn’s personal physician. He said that the actress Marilyn Monroe committed suicide. When the police arrived at the house of the movie star, they found Marilyn’s naked body next to a bottle of sedatives. According to the description of the scene, she was lying face down, her face buried in a pillow, her arms stretched out along her body, the right arm slightly bent, her legs straight.
The investigation immediately suggested that she was put this way by someone, because, in spite of the general concept, an overdose of sleeping pills usually causes cramps in the victim’s leg and vomiting, and the position of the body is distorted. Witness evidence was very strange. They claimed that Marilyn’s body was found before four o’clock, but they could not go to the police until so permitted by the advertising department of the “20th Century Fox Film Corporation.”
The preliminary autopsy determined that Marilyn died of an overdose of barbiturates. Traces of pentobarbital (sleeping pills) were found in her liver, and chloral hydrate in her blood. The reason of Marilyn’s death was identified as a “probable suicide.”
The coroner based his determination of the cause of death as a “suicide” on traces of sedatives present in her blood, her previous suicide attempts, and lack of signs of violence. Some forensic experts did not agree. They argued that there were no traces of Nembutal in Monroe’s stomach or intestines, and only in her liver, suggesting that Marilyn died of a rectally administered barbiturate enema.
Some experts argue a very convincing case for the accidental death of the celebrity. It is possible that her doctors, trying to wean Marilyn off Nembutal, gave her chloral hydrate. Chloral hydrate significantly slows down the metabolism and absorption of Nembutal. Doctors could not know when and what she took given that the drugs do not interact well. Almost every doctor makes serious and sometimes fatal mistakes when treating their patients. It should be also considered that during the day Marilyn frequently took drugs. Obviously, a theory of accidental death or murder is more exciting than other theories.
Celebrity status is more prone to criminal romance. Of course, it is important to distinguish between withholding of information by powerful people from committing crimes and eliminating people who can potentially create serious problems. There are a number of credible people who claim that Marilyn Monroe had an affair with one or both of the Kennedy brothers. According to Marilyn’s trustee, Monroe had a real claim to the role of the first lady. Her letters and phone calls to Kennedy became tiresome and very risky. It is one thing to have fun with nameless girls, but quite another to have an affair with a sex symbol and celebrity. The actress could easily deprive both of the presidency because she knew about many private issues, or even issues relating to the national security. The influential brothers had their reasons to break off the relations with Marilyn forever. Therefore, it is possible that Robert was the man who tried to end the celebrity’s relationships with the Kennedy clan.
According to Marilyn’s friends, the relationships that developed between her and the two brothers and that were not previously known to the public were the talk of the town in Hollywood. Marilyn was often seen dancing or having an intimate conversation at private parties with Bobby or John. According to her close friends, Bobby fell in love with Marilyn, but the feeling was not mutual because Monroe’s heart still belonged to his older brother, John. Sometimes, Marilyn and John would secretly meet during official visits of the latter and often spoke on the phone. Kennedy even got her a personal number so she could contact him through the Ministry of Justice. Marilyn’s hopes for a future together with the president grew stronger, and she believed that John F. Kennedy would one day be able to divorce Jackie and marry her.
In 1962, she performed at Madison Square Garden at John F. Kennedy’s birthday party, singing the famous “Happy Birthday Mr. President”. The performance caused rumors in the crowd since the relationships were publicly demonstrated. The rumors about Marilyn and Kennedy began to actively circulate in the American society. There was a danger that if the relationships with the President and Marilyn continue, John could be drawn into a scandal.
In the summer of 1962, Marilyn was asked to stop all contact with the brothers, and their relationships came to an abrupt end. Marilyn was broken and fell into a deep depression. She even shared with friends that she would not mind telling the truth about her relationships with the Kennedy brothers in retaliation for the pain they have caused her.
A few weeks before her death, Marilyn’s career and personal life, in a sense, were on the rise. She was invited to a number of new film projects and spent a weekend with Joe DiMaggio, and according to rumors they planned to re-marry. Unfortunately, next weekend Marilyn was found dead at her home in Brentwood. Her death was ruled a suicide by an overdose of sleeping pills. However, many still believe that she was killed because she knew too much. On the eve of the tragic events she was visited by Frank Sinatra who wanted to make sure that she was not going to cover the details of her relationship with JFK in the press. They say that gangster Sam Giancana threatened her for the same reason, and some unflattering photos of the actress were brought to light to blackmail her. Now everyone understands that the actual events that surrounded the death of Marilyn will never be made public. The only thing we know for sure is that the living legend mysteriously died in her prime, surrounded by mystery, scandal and uncertainty.

The Labour Party is proposing a new rule that would give electorates the ability to prevent men from contesting a seat for the party.
New Zealand Labor Leader David Shearer is now disapproving of his party’s idea of a “man ban”, for male contenders looking for a seat in office. Shearer commented on the ordeal today, saying that he did have “absolutely support” for the idea of more females becoming members in Parliament.
Still, he made himself clear by telling that “this mechanism in particular, I’m not supportive of it”. The “man ban” proposal will be voted on at their party’s once a year conference this fall but the topic is already creating friction.
The Labor Party hopes to get the number of women in caucus to 45 percent by 2014 and push it up to 50 percent by 2017. Shearer agrees with raising the figures for both next year and the years which follow “but the bottom line here is how we would do that”, according to him.
“It’s about making sure we get excellent candidates up and we select them it’s as simple as that,” Shearer said and then added, “I don’t like the idea that we are going to be enforcing something like that. I think we should be doing it as a matter of getting behind good women and making sure they get into Parliament.”
Come November, the decision will be debated over and then decided on. It is said that the vote will be intense, as currently the party is divided over the issue of having a ‘man ban’.

Egypt’s health ministry has said that at least 17 people were killed and over 200 injured in clashes between pro and anti-Morsi protesters on Friday. The most violent are at the 6th October bridge near Tahrir, amid reports of gunfire and Molotov cocktails.
The unrest has rocked some eight areas of Cairo, with Alexandria and approximately six other provinces as street battles have erupted between pro- and anti-Morsi supporters.
In Cairo, street battles are breaking out near Tahrir Square.
At least three deaths as a result of the most recent clashes near Tahrir Square has been reported.
A car has been set on fire amid a barrage of fireworks put to use as weapons and physical violence between pro- and anti-Morsi protesters. Later reports suggested that further shots and tear gas had been fired.
Helicopters are flying overhead and ambulances are arriving on the scene according to RT’s Paula Slier. The military are refraining from direct intervention according to witnesses on the scene.
People have been running in a disorientated manner through plumes of thick smoke, with some traffic caught in the middle and lots of small fires being started. Protesters hurled stones from the bridge as the fireworks went off.
The loud bangs emanating from the fireworks have been interspersed with gunshots, according to eyewitnesses.
A large pro-Morsi crowd had been heading in the direction of the state ‘Maspero’ TV building and gathered outside in the vicinity of anti-Morsi crowds, fueling fears that violent encounter would occur as they edged closer towards the square. Some injuries were reported at the TV station. As protesters later moved towards he bridge, crowds at Maspero thinned out.
Egypt witnessed 10 deaths nationwide on Friday alone, according to Ministry of Health data.
In addition to Friday’s outbreak of violence in the capital, the Sidi Jaber district of Alexandria was badly hit, as pro-Morsi protesters lobbed stones and Molotov cocktails at police cars blocking the streets. A petrol bomb hit a car, leading several people to attempt to quell the flames with water from bottles.
Over the course of the protests, according to Ministry of Health data released on June 30, 62 people had died and more than 2500 have been injured.
