POST 2015

Greater accountability of governments must be at the heart of the UN’s post 2015 development agenda

This week, 195 civil society groups from around the world have joined together to call on the UN to putaccess to information and media freedom at a centre of the post 2015 development agenda.
Our work shows that when people are able to access information, they can take active steps to hold those in power to account and demand fundamental rights:
  • IBangladesh, activists are using right to information laws to hold authorities accountable for creating a safe and sustainable environment
  • People in rural Brazil are using the Access to Information Law to help them fight for better access to, and a better quality of, water
  • In Indonesia, parents of marginalised school children used the country’s Freedom of Information Law to hold schools to accountfor how they used school funds
  • In Senegal, the high instance of obstetric fistula - and the scarcity of information about preventing and treating this devastating injury - strongly demonstrate why access to information is crucial to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
Today, ARTICLE 19 Executive Director, Thomas Hughes sets out why accountability is vital for a new global development agenda in his blog. He makes the case for why everyone in the development community should unite to demand a post 2015 plan that includes both access to information and the right to freedom of expression.
