Welcome to this week's Web Development newsletter from The Code Project.

News

Last Microsoft released its Windows 8 Consumer Preview and, yes, it probably does affect web developers to the extent that it includes the latest release of Internet Explorer 10. Paul Thurrott runs through the Windows 8 Consumer Preview: Internet Explorer 10 Secrets so you’ll know what to expect.
Interested in how it stacks up against the competition? Neowin has Windows 8 CP’s Internet Explorer 10 benchmarked for both Metro and desktop browsers against Chrome, Firefox and Opera. TechWith offers The IE10 new list of features at a glance, and you can always benchmark it yourself over at HTML5Test.
Along with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview we also received a Windows Server 8 preview, which is definitely going to have an impact on web sites hosted on Windows. For some background see Scott Forsyth’s explanation of What’s New in IIS 8.
These new releases from Microsoft also include an update to the ASP.NET MVC framework. Leon Cullens shares his enthusiasm for the New features of ASP.NET MVC 4 that you will love. While you’re at it, check out Scott Guthrie’s A Look at ASP.NET MVC 4 presentation from TechDays 2012.
Microsoft isn’t the only one updating browsers and tools, though, and Andi Smith goes Hands on with Firefox’s Developer Tools. Many of us are old friends with Firebug, and while it’s still supported as an extension, much of that functionality is now built right into the browser.
For more handy web development tools, check out the use of Online tools I regularly find helpful on Google+ from Addy Osmani. Definitely read through the comments for additional tool tips.
I think frameworks can definitely fall under the heading of helpful tools, and Nicolas Gallagher talks a bit About normalize.css a small CSS file that provides better cross-browser consistency in the default styling of HTML elements.
jQuery is another of those handy frameworks, and if you haven’t tried it yet, you’re missing out on a real time-saver. Andrée Hansson has written a thorough walk through of The Basics of jQuery that will get you going. Definitely one of the better beginner guides I’ve come across so far.
When you’re a bit more familiar with it, you’ll probably want to extend jQuery to suit your projects. You could do worse than starting with 10 Coding Tips to Write Superior jQuery Plugins from Websanova. Learn from those who already made the mistakes.
And what are you going to do with all these new tools and technologies? How about building beautiful web apps. You’ve got the code covered, and Corina Ciripitca at Designmodo introduces some Principles of Clean Web Design that will make it look great. Also helpful: Principles of Color and the Color Wheel from Codrops.
Until next week, remember to close your tags and test in all the right browsers.
