CHINA TO INVEST USD 1.5 B IN BULGARIA, CHAMBER CHIEF SAYS
China is going to invest some USD 1.5 B in the Bulgarian economy in the upcoming years, according to Viktor Azmanov, chair of the Bulgarian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Azmanov said the governments of Bulgaria and China have already signed an economic cooperation memorandum that will enable the opening of several factories in Bulgaria with Chinese investments, creating up to 500 jobs. read more

One of the two major trade unions in Bulgaria, the Confederation of Independent Bulgarian Syndicates (KNSB), has elected its interim chief Plamen Dimitrov as its permanent President.

OVER 80% OF BULGARIAN EMPLOYERS LACK UNIVERSITY EDUCATION
Over 80% of all Bulgarian employers have only finished high school or have an even lower education level, according to a study conducted by the Bulgarian Industrial Association.
There are some 300 000 active companies in Bulgaria and 80% of their owners have low education, Serafim Petrov, an expert from the Association, has told local media. read more

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will receive a copy of a historic letter written by Dimitar Peshev, the man whose initiative rescued a total of 50 000 Bulgarian Jews from deportation to Nazi concentration camps.
The letter will be handed to Netanyahu by Petar Paunov, Mayor of Peshev's hometown of Kyustendil, Darik radio informs. read more

BULGARIA WON'T PUNISH PILOTS OF CRASHED FIGHTER JET
The two pilots of the MiG-29 fighter jet that crashed in Bulgaria last week will not be sanctioned, the country's Defense Minister Anyu Angelov declared on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Angelov told local media that a pilot's mistake has caused the crash of the Bulgarian Air Force MiG 29, which went down on April 26, 2012, during the Thracian Star 2012 joint military drills with the US. read more

EC TO BOYCOTT EURO 2012 IN UKRAINE OVER TYMOSHENKO

EU DIPLOMATS 'PLEASED' WITH BULGARIA'S CONFISCATION BILL
Bulgaria's Justice Minister, Diana Kovacheva, met Thursday with Ambassadors in Sofia from the European Union Member States to discuss the country's parliamentary debates on the controversial bill authorizing confiscation of illegal assets.
Kovacheva told the media that the diplomats have demonstrated huge interest towards the bill and are following the debates closely. They have also vowed full support for Bulgaria in the passing of "such complex and difficult law." read more

European Parliament President Martin Schulz has thrown his weight behind Bulgarian Socialist Party leader and ex PM Sergey Stanishev for the permanent post of President of the Party of European Socialists.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991. read more

EX FOREIGN MINISTER GANEV TO LEAVE USA FOR BULGARIA
Stoyan Ganev, one of the emblematic figures of the early years of Bulgaria's post-communist transition, is going to leave the USA, and to settle back in his Bulgarian hometown of Pazardzhik, a report says.
Ganev is known as Bulgaria's Deputy PM and Foreign Minister in the 1991-1992 government of PM Filip Dimitrov. He is famous for a controversial purge of Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry after the collapse of the communist regime in 1989. In 1992, he chaired the 47th session of the UN General Assembly. read more

30 BULGARIAN CUSTOMS OFFICERS CAUGHT RED-HANDED WITH BRIBES
A special operation, codenamed "Customs" has been conducted Wednesday evening at the Capitan Andreevo checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Turkish border.
The operation, carried out by the Main Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime, GDBOP, the Internal Security Department of the Interior Ministry, and the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, aimed at countering racketeering of people and companies passing through the checkpoint. read more

8 BULGARIAN CUSTOMS OFFICERS FACE EXTORTION, BRIBERY CHARGES
Charges have been pressed against 8 of the total of 32customs officers detained during the "Customs" special operation at the Bulgaria–Turkey border crossing at Kapitan Andreevo, according to Sofia City Prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov.
Kokinov told journalists Thursday that five had been charged with participating in an organized crime group specialized in racketeering and three were facing bribery charges. read more

BULGARIA'S NOROTIOUS MOBSTER PAIR GOES TO JAIL
Bulgaria's Supreme Court of Cassations upheld Thursday the jail sentences of the notorious alleged mobster pair Angel Hristov and Plamen Galev, better known as the Galevi brothers.
The magistrates, however, reduced Galev's sentence by two years and Hristov's by one on grounds they have clean criminal records and are known for charitable activities. Galev will thus serve 5 years behind bars while Hristov will be in jail for 4 years, both on charges of participating in an organized crime group dealing with racket and extortion. The rule is final and cannot be appealed. read more

BULGARIAN NURSERY SCHOOL DIRECTOR CAUGHT WITH HEFTY BRIBE
A 45-year-old director of a nursery school in Bulgaria's Varna has been arrested with a bribe of BGN 700 (EUR 340), which is more than twice the minimum monthly salary in the country (ЕUR 150).
Diana Agop Kuneva, who is in charge of the Iglika nursery school in the Troshevo quarter in the Black Sea city of Varna, was busted on Thursday with the bribe in a police operation, announced Varna District Prosecutor Vladimir Chavdarov. read more

PUTIN WANTS TO TREAT TYMOSHENKO, SLAMS EURO 2012 BOYCOTT
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin responded Thursday to calls for a boycott of the Euro 2012 football championship in Ukraine over the case of jailed ex PM Yulia Tymoshenko by saying that sport and politics should not mix.
Putin also expressed Russia's readiness to accept "with pleasure" Tymoshenko for medical treatment, should the Ukrainian authorities agree. read more
