1776, during the American Revolutionary War: Thomas Hickey, Continental Army private and bodyguard to General George Washington, is hanged for mutiny and sedition.
1865, the Army of the Potomac, the major Union Army in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War, is disbanded
1902, the U.S. Congress passes the Spooner Act, authorizing President Theodore Roosevelt to acquire rights from Colombia for the Panama Canal
1914, Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo by young Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip, the casus belli of World War I
1919, the Treaty of Versailles is signed in Paris, formally ending World War I between Belgium, Britain, France, Italy, the United States and allies on the one side and Germany and Austria Hungary on the other side
1967, Israel declared Jerusalem reunified under its sovereignty following its capture of the Arab sector in the Six-Day War

2011, the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, issued an arrest warrant for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi on charges of crimes against humanity
2012, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the new healthcare law known as the Affordable Care Act or ObamaCare. ALSO: Attorney General Eric Holder became the first sitting Cabinet member held in contempt of Congress, a rebuke pushed by Republicans seeking to unearth the facts behind a bungled gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious. (The vote was 255-67, with more than 100 Democrats boycotting.)
