At
the top of the federal government, even a brief shutdown of "core NSA
operations" is unthinkable. But at the grassroots, a permanent shutdown
of the NSA should be more than thinkable; we should strive to make it
achievable.
"The
connections between war and surveillance are clear. I don't want to
give too much away but Glenn and I are working on a project right now
that has at its center how the National Security Agency plays a
significant, central role in the U.S. assassination program," said
Scahill, speaking to moviegoers in Rio de Janeiro, where the documentary
based on his book made its Latin American debut at the Rio Film
Festival.
Stuck
in the here and now, we can only judge Bibi Netanyahu as the nightmare
man he plays on television. His latest drama is to push Washington to
demand that the Iranians give up enrichment and most other elements of
even a peaceful nuclear program. Call it chutzpah on steroids.

On the Eve of Obamacare: Too Smart to Really Fix Our Health Care System, So We Count the Dead
Ever
listen to the late William F. Buckley, Jr., speak for long periods of
time? The drone of his uber-intellectualism was certainly filled with
facts we might all have needed to know, but I often feel a similar
pallor wash over my brain when the uber-smart of single-payerdom begin
their soliloquies.

Tomgram: Dilip Hiro, The Mystery of Washington's Waning Global Power Among the curious spectacles of our moment, the strangeness of the Obama presidency hasn't gotten its full due. After decades in which "the imperial presidency" was increasingly in the spotlight, after two terms of George W. Bush in which a literal cult of executive power -- or to use the term of that moment, "the unitary executive" -- took hold in the White House...
The
predictions of disaster in Syria were made over a year ago. They
turned out to be accurate. The Western powers and oil oligarchs knew
this would happen, yet they pursued the attack on Syria. Shame on them.
The
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is ramping up car bombing and
suicide bombing in Iraq itself -- because the "apostate" Shi'ite-led
al-Maliki government is as much a target as the secular Bashar al-Assad.
Now it's clear how "invisible" al-Zawahiri and wily Bandar Bush have
appropriated Washington's "strategy" to really get what they want.
The
Westagate shopping mall attack shows that ever-indreasing violence
claims lives but doesn't make any difference on issues. However,
ensuring our security becomes increasingly tricky too unless we turn to
prevention and mediation.

Quantitative Easing Announcement Triggers Buying Frenzy: Bernanke's Head Fake Sends Stocks Soaring
Fed
chairman Ben Bernanke shocked the world on September 18 when he
announced there would be no change in the Fed's $85 billion-per-month
asset purchase program dubbed QE. Bernanke forged ahead without
developing a coherent exit strategy. That's a big no-no; you never want
to paint yourself into a corner especially when trillions of dollars and
the stability of the financial system are at stake.
The
Republicans want to shut down the government -- again. They want to
destroy The Affordable Care Act -- again. Has there ever been a
political party in the history of America that has done so much damage
to this government, the nation and its people? Enough is enough, it's
time for the American people to shut this political party down and end
its reign of obstruction and destruction.
I
have spent the last several days in a Breaking Bad fever dream, asking
myself, "Who is the Walter White/Heisenberg of the sports world?" I am
very aware that I couldn't come up with a hackier First Take--style
question unless I was asking what sports commissioner is most like Miley
Cyrus.
Nanomedicine,
refers to highly specific medical intervention at the molecular level
for curing disease or repairing damaged tissues. Though in its infancy,
could we be looking at the future of medicine? Early clinical trials
certainly look promising.
The
general in charge of all US nuclear offensive forces has suspended his
deputy, Navy Vice Adm. Tim Giardina, over his suspected role in a casino
scandal that involved "a significant monetary amount" of counterfeit
gambling chips. Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler suspended Giardina on
September 3 without publicly announcing the move.
Don't worry ... that bridge you're driving over won't collapse. Probably.
Many bridges were built to last 50 years--more than 50 years ago. Today, politicians insist the government doesn't have enough money to fix or replace them, and of course, the amount required gets bigger as time passes and bridges get older. It's a simple choice for government: What's the priority, safe bridges (combined with job creation repairing or replacing them) or low taxes on billionaires? Of course, we know the Republican answer to that question, and it ain't safety and jobs.
TPP Protestors Scale Trade Building To Bring Attention to Secretive Deal
Kevin Zeese: The Trans-Pacific Partnership has nothing to do with trade or freedom, and ongoing demonstrations could encourage those on the inside
Rouhani
is the very opposite of his predecessor. An Iranian who recognizes and
condemns the Holocaust! An Iranian man who offers sweetness and light!
An Iranian who wishes peace and friendship on all nations -- even
hinting that Israel could be included, if only we give up the occupied
Palestinian territories!
This
is the first in a long series of articles that will attack the
fallacies that promote rape culture. If we are to undermine rape culture
then we have to talk about everything that it is and not just throw
around the term.

Why Obama May Stand Up To Netanyahu If President Obama is looking for a "legacy," there's no better place to start than by standing up to the Israeli Prime Minister and for peace with Iran.

Disappearing the Whistleblower: We Would Not Be Talking About NSA Without Edward Snowden
Daily Kos: Disappearing the Whistleblower: We Would Not Be Talking About NSA Without Edward Snowden

This Way This article by Kathy Kelly is the foreword to David Swanson's new book, War No More: The Case for Abolition.
Breaking
Bad, ends almost exactly 1600 years since Sophocles wrote Oedipus Rex
and demonstrates the paradox of free will. But unlike any other modern
drama, the main character finds at least partial redemption in
admitting, "I did it because I wanted to"- a completely novel idea in
modern times!

We Live Under a Total Surveillance State in America -- Can We Prevent It from Evolving into a Full-Blown Police State? 5
It's our duty to save democracy from the authoritarianism emerging from the Executive Branch.
America
is no longer recognizeable as the "Land of the Free," and more closely
resembles the police states of China and the former East Germany, though
most Americans don't realize it, says TCHB! journalist Dave Lindorff,
who lived and worked in China

Huge
engineering project may signal geopolitical changes in a region
Washington sees as its "backyard." Wang Jing of Beijing is nowadays
seized by the same grand and tantalizing prospect that long obsessed an
American named William Walker -- the dream of building a canal across
the Central American republic of Nicaragua. More direct and therefore
cheaper, such a waterway would provide a better route between the
Atlantic and the Pacific, or between the east and west coasts of the
United States, than the canal that was eventually built, the one through
Panama.
With
Israel's 10-year military assistance agreement with the United States
due to expire in 2017, the Jewish state's military chiefs are already
pushing for annual U.S. aid to be increased beyond the current $3.1
billion, even though America's struggling with an economic crisis. The
Israelis are citing a 2008 U.S. law that for the first time legally
committed Washington to maintain the Jewish state's technological
superiority -- its Qualitative Military Edge, or QME, in military
terminology -- over its regional adversaries, particularly Iran, which
has been pursuing nuclear technology.

When Gen. Alexander was asked a year ago if the Bluffdale center would hold the data of Americans, he replied no: “We don’t hold data on U.S. citizens,” adding that reports that they would “grab all the e-mails” were “grossly misreported.”Dem Sen Ron Wyden of Oregon told me ruefully that on Thursday, “Alexander put in a lockbox information that he’s told the public he doesn’t have. This is what we’re dealing with.Bamford believes that the NSA has transmogrified to one “that keeps collecting and collecting and collecting but doesn’t seem to do us any good.”The more electronic hay they stack on their haystack, the more difficult it is to find the needle.” Bamford believes that Americans need to get alarmed that James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, can deceive Congress without even a reprimand from the president. |
