While a lifetime vaccine for HIV still remains unavailable, a major breakthrough experiment using a different technique paves the way for effective long-term protection against the deadly virus.
“This might turn out to be a seasonal alternative to a vaccine until we really know how to make one,” said HIV researcher Malcolm Martin of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland, the lead author of a new study published in Nature.
A vaccine activates the organism’s own defense, so that it begins producing antibodies that fight a disease. But in this case, American and German scientists injected ready-made antibodies which were produced by infected humans and then processed in a lab.
During the trial study, a group of macaques were exposed to doses of HIV, and its simian equivalent SIV, with scientists noting that the animals became infected within two to six exposures.
Four groups of other healthy macaques were then given various formulations of antibodies, then exposed to the disease once a week.
Results were notable: depending on which antibodies they were given, the monkeys managed to stay healthy through 12 to 23 weekly exposures, with risk gradually growing as the concentration of antibodies in the bloodstream declined.
“The result is surprising,” Ruth Ruprecht, director of the AIDS Research Program at Texas Biomedical Research Institute, who was not involved in the study, told The Verge. “I am astonished by how long protection lasted.”

Driverless-truck
A convoy of self-driving trucks recently drove across Europe and arrived at the Port of Rotterdam. No technology will automate away more jobs — or drive more economic efficiency — than the driverless truck.
Shipping a full truckload from L.A. to New York costs around $4,500 today, with labor representing 75 percent of that cost. But those labor savings aren’t the only gains to be had from the adoption of driverless trucks.
Where drivers are restricted by law from driving more than 11 hours per day without taking an 8-hour break, a driverless truck can drive nearly 24 hours per day. That means the technology would effectively double the output of the U.S. transportation network at 25 percent of the cost.
And the savings become even more significant when you account for fuel efficiency gains. The optimal cruising speed from a fuel efficiency standpoint is around 45 miles per hour, whereas truckers who are paid by the mile drive much faster. Further fuel efficiencies will be had as the self-driving fleets adopt platooning technologies, like those from Peloton Technology, allowing trucks to draft behind one another in highway trains.
Trucking represents a considerable portion of the cost of all the goods we buy, so consumers everywhere will experience this change as lower prices and higher standards of living.
In addition, once the technology is mature enough to be rolled out commercially, we will also enjoy considerable safety benefits. This year alone more people will be killed in traffic accidents involving trucks than in all domestic airline crashes in the last 45 years combined. At the same time, more truck drivers were killed on the job, 835, than workers in any other occupation in the U.S.

The Bavarian parliament has held a discussion on whether Hitler’s notorious ‘Mein Kampf’ should become a part of the school curriculum. The idea was blasted by the country’s Jewish groups who called the book an “antisemitic concoction of hatred.”
The Parliament conducted a plenary session on Thursday with the opposition parties including the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Voters pushing for the book to be included in the education program. During the session the politicians discussed whether the new annotated version of ‘Mein Kampf’ should be included in Bavaria’s school programs, and if so, how exactly it should be taught.
While supporters of the controversial idea insist the book is vital for the teaching of history, representatives from the Jewish community argued that the book does not contain any useful knowledge.
“I think Hitler’s antisemitic concoction of hatred is not a suitable for teaching,” said the former president of the Central Council of Jews and head of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria Charlotte Knobloch, DPA news agency reported.
“I hope that the parliament came to the decision that ‘Mein Kampf’ is not recommended as a suitable material for educational use,” Knobloch added.
Earlier Knobloch warned the new edition is most likely spark interest in the original text and ideology, rather than in the commentary provided to challenge Hitler’s ideas.
Thousands of copies of “Hilter, Mein Kampf: A Critical Edition” have been sold since January when the new annotated version appeared on Germany’s shelves after the state of Bavaria removed a 70-year copyright on the book. It is the first time the text was printed since the times of the Second World War.
Even before the release of the annotated version, the German Teacher’s Association proposed that the Nazi manifesto be taught in high schools to help “immunize” youngsters against far-right ideologies. The heads of the association said Mein Kampf is better taught as a revised edition by “professionally trained politics teachers,” rather than being accessed by youngsters on the web without any guidance.
“A professional use of excerpts from the [original]text for lecturing can be an important tool for immunization of teenagers against political extremism,” the president of the association, Josef Kraus, told Handelsblatt newspaper.
The 2,000-page version with as many as 3,700 annotations aimed at providing context behind Hitler’s Nazi propaganda climbed to the top spot on Der Spiegel’s nonfiction bestseller list this month.

Minnesota is home to one in three Somalis in the US, according to MPR News, and Somali leaders in the Twin Cities claim that members of their community are subject to higher scrutiny and harassment from TSA agents.
In an effort to address these concerns, Andrew Rhoades, an assistant federal security director for the TSA, met with Somali imams and others in the local Somali community. Rhoades’s good intentions, however, were being undermined by his superiors.
Testifying at Wednesday’s House oversight committee hearing, Rhoades said his supervisors had ulterior motives for the meetings.
“Recently I was asked to profile Somali imams and community members visiting my office,” Rhoades said, adding, “I will not do this,” City Pages reported.
Rhoades told legislators that his TSA supervisors wanted to screen Somali-Americans through databases to check for terrorist ties, the Star Tribune reported. The problem with this, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota) wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, is that Somalis would be screened for terrorist connections “by the same office designed to address their complaints.”
Rhoades went on to describe a toxic work climate fostered by the TSA, a “culture of misconduct, retaliation, lack of trust, cover-ups, and the refusal to hold its senior leaders accountable for poor judgment and malfeasance.”
His testimony described a “punitive” system of punishing employees through transfers and demotions. In one case, Rhoades claims that a female staffer was transferred after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a co-worker. When a male employee refused to cover up the harassment, he was allegedly demoted by two positions.
Rhoades himself was reassigned after being suspected of leaking information to a news station. He also claims that after meeting an imam at a mosque, a supervisor accused him of “going native.”

Three relatives of the San Bernardino terrorists who killed 14 people in December at a Southern California social services building were arrested Thursday on federal conspiracy, marriage fraud and false statement charges, the FBI announced. The arrests don’t appear to bear a direct connection to the terror attack, but center on a 2014 marriage-for-citizenship scam allegedly carried out by Enrique Marquez and Mariya Chernykh.
“While investigating the terrorist attack, federal agents obtained official records showing that Marquez, a former neighbor of Syed Rizwan Farook’s, is married to Chernykh,” the U.S. attorney’s office said in a statement. “The investigation determined that Marquez agreed to marry Chernykh so she could obtain immigration benefits that were not available to her because she is a Russian citizen and did not have legal status in the United States.”
Chernykh paid Marquez to enter into the “sham marriage,” the US Attorney said. Marquez is already in jail and awaiting trial for conspiring with one of the San Bernardino attackers, Syed Rizwan Farook, in terror plots that never materialized.
Federal court documents obtained by FoxNews.com tied to Marquez’s case show both he and Farook abruptly halted plans for a dual terror attack in 2012. In that assault, Marquez and Farook allegedly planned to use pipe bombs and two AR-15 rifles “to maximize the number of casualties” at Riverside City College, a nearby institution they attended, and on state Route 91, a busy freeway with few exits where motorists are frequently stuck in heavy gridlock.
Marquez is also accused of supplying weapons to Farook and his foreign bride Tashfeen Malik before the Dec. 2 attack, that also left 22 injured.
Marquez’s wife, Mariya Chernykh, 26, is charged with fraud and misuse of visa, permits and other documents. She’s also accused of perjury and two counts of making false statements to federal agents.
“FBI agents interviewed Chernykh as part of the investigation into the IRC terrorist attacks, and she allegedly made false statements that she lived with Marquez at Syed Raheel Farook and Tatiana Farook’s residence in Corona,” the US Attorney said.
Tatiana Farook, 31, Chernykh’s sister, and her husband Syed Raheel Farook, 31, who is also Syed Rizwan Farook’s brother, were also arrested. Chernykh and Tatiana Farook are Russian immigrants.
The FBI said in a statement that Tatiana and Syed Raheel Farook “participated in the [marriage]conspiracy by, among other things, witnessing Marquez ad Chernykh’s wedding, taking staged family pictures of Maruqez and Chernykh” and other actions.
All three were indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on five counts and will be arraigned in court on Thursday.
