More Twenty years ago, Kazakhstan closed a dark chapter in its nuclear history by officially shutting down the infamous Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in the northeast Kazakh steppe. Over a 40-year period, the Soviet Union conducted more than one-quarter of the world's nuclear tests at the site. He predicted catastrophe and it happened in 1969, when 20 miners died. The KGB sent him to the psychiatric hospital, and he became officially insane. More In 1932-33 Russia took from Ukrainian villagers all their grain and left them with nothing. Over 3 million people died. In the village of Targan, south of Kyiv, 360 out of 900 houses died of starvation. In one case the parents ate their own son. Aleksandra Avdiuk and her friend Lesia Maslov were kids at the time of the famine. They remember. More A group of dissidents from Lithuania managed to build an ideal shelter for their samizdat. The whole publishing house was placed 7 meters underground. More David Satter, the author of the book "Age of Delirium", contacted dissidents in Estonia and went to talk to them in February 1977. His journey started off as a lark but ended up in confusion. Did he spend two days with KGB agents or Estonian dissidents? More Ildar Isangulov was a Soviet soldier who had a drink with a Polish citizen. Somebody proposed a toast for "all Slavs" but the Pole refused the toast. Ildar was shocked that his Slavic brother refused to drink with him.... More Lithuania was the first country to openly fight for independence. The Soviet leadership, including Gorbachev, accused them of violating the U.S.S.R.'s Constitution. In January 1992 Russian troops took control of key buildings in Vilnius. Soviet tanks began moving to the TV tower and civilians rushed to protect it. Loreta was among them. More Outside St. Petersburg, there is a huge forest. From August 1937 to September 1938, 40,000 people were executed and buried in this forest. The site was uncovered in 1989 through the stories of truck drivers who took people and corpses to the forest. Muscovites took to the street to defend the White House, where Russian President Boris Yeltsin stood up to the coup. The tanks got the order to move to the square and disperse the protesters, but Alpha group leader Serge More In a small village in Russia, Velikie Luki, a 9-year-old girl, Nina Smirnova, had an accident and was paralyzed in December 1959.
