amos gitaiMeet the world-renowned director and JTS’s Fall 2013 Ginor Visiting Professor of Israel Studies Amos Gitai at a new film series on campus. Each program will screen three films, followed by a discussion with Amos Gitai and noted architects, filmmakers, critics, or JTS faculty and moderated by Richard Peña, professor of Film Studies at the School of the Arts at Columbia University, former director of the New York Film Festival, and co-host of PBS’s Reel 13.

Today, October 9, “Architecture as History” will feature Anat Gilead, Israeli consul for cultural affairs; Oded Hirsch, visual artist; and Madeline Schwartzman, architect and filmmaker. The remaining programs include “Living Spaces” on Monday, October 14; and “Outsiders” on Monday, October 21. All three programs will be held from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $36 ($18 for students) for the entire series, or $18 ($5 for students) per program. JTS staff welcome at student prices. New York Archives Week Program: The Library’s Johanna Spector Archival Collection—Today, October 9
On the occasion of New York Archives Week, The Library will introduce the Johanna Spector Archival Collection, made accessible to the public through the assistance of a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and administered by the Council on Library Information Resources. Presented today, October 9, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the program will include a screening of Dr. Spector’s film, Two Thousand Years of Freedom and Honor, and a display of artifacts from the world-renowned ethnomusicologist’s collection. Standing Together Against Slavery: Jewish Social Action Month at JTS
During Heshvan, JTS is taking part in Jewish Social Action Month by focusing on human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking, and how it can be stopped. Va’ad Gemilut Hasadim: The Susan and Jack Rudin Center for Community Outreach of JTS and UJA-Federation of New York will cosponsor a series of talks and workshops, along with the opportunity to volunteer and a dedicated worship service. The JTS Library Marks the Opening of the Polonsky Digitization Lab in Memory of Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum
Dedication Celebrated with Special Exhibit

The Library is pleased to inaugurate the Polonsky Digitization Lab in Memory of Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum. Made possible by a generous donation from philanthropic leaders Dr. Georgette Bennett and Dr. Leonard Polonsky CBE, this state-of-the-art facility expands The JTS Library’s capacity to make digital images of its rare manuscripts available online. Rabbi Tanenbaum, a graduate of JTS, was a leader in human rights, interreligious affairs, and social justice. Read more about how the lab helps JTS share its treasured collection with the world at large.

In honor of the lab’s dedication, The JTS Library is currently featuring the exhibit Sifre Evronot: Calendar Calculation Manuals, 16th–18th Centuries, on view until November 30, 2013. A combination of original manuscripts and digital facsimile prints reveals intriguing details of calculation manuals that correlated the Jewish and Christian calendars in the 16th through 18th centuries, a task that was considered both sacred and practical. The exhibit was curated by Joshua Jerusalmi, with digitization photography by Dwight Primiano and assistance of Library staff.

JTS to Host “Al Pi Darko: National Ramah Symposium on Special Needs Programs,” October 13 
On Sunday, October 13, JTS’s National Ramah Commission will present “Al Pi Darko: National Ramah Symposium on Special Needs Programs.” Taking its name from Proverbs 22:6, “Train each child in the way he or she learns best,” the conference has two parts: “Special Needs at Ramah: Best Practices and Strategic Vision,” from noon to 5:00 p.m., will feature sessions about program models and best practices for Ramah directors, staff, and alumni; parents and alumni parents; lay leaders; funders; and JTS students. A dinner reception and community forum on Jewish camping for children with disabilities, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., will include a panel presentation and discussion for educators and supporters from the broader Jewish community. “Questions with Answers and Questions without Answers: Science and Religion”
Best-Selling Author Dr. Alan Lightman to Deliver Jack and Lewis Rudin Lecture JTS on October 16

Two great forces, science and religion, have shaped the world and our lives. What is the nature of their relationship? What are the central pillars of biology, physics, and astronomy? What is the role of faith?

Dr. Alan Lightman, best-selling author of Einstein’s Dreams, theoretical physicist, and Professor of the Practice of the Humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will speak about these issues at a Jack and Lewis Rudin Lecture on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. at JTS. Jack Moline, adjunct lecturer of Professional and Pastoral Skills at JTS and rabbi of Agudas Achim Congregation in Alexandria, Virginia, will conduct a discussion with Dr. Lightman following the lecture. “Jewish Pluralism in Israel” at the JCC in Manhattan on October 20 
JTS is cosponsoring an interdenominational forum about Jewish pluralism in Israel, activism, and what American Jews can do in relation to both. The forum will be held at the JCC in Manhattan on Sunday, October 20, from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $36. Register here. Alumni Rabbi Ayelet S. Cohen (RS ’02) and Rabbi David Rosenn (RS ’97) will participate, among many esteemed speakers.

Yudith Schreiber: Blind Impress Photography Exhibition to Open at JTS, October 31

The Arts Advisory Board and The JTS Library announce the opening of Yudith Schreiber: Blind Impress, an exhibition by the Israeli photographer that will be on display at JTS from October 31 to December 19, 2013. Previously exhibited at the Museum of Israeli Art in Ramat Gan, it features images of discarded found objects and of the sea, highlighting Schreiber's personal relationship with the tragic loss of the Israeli submarine Dakar. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, October 31, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free, but reservations are required. “What Is Life Worth? Tailoring the Law to Meet the Challenges of Unique Catastrophes”
Lecture by Former 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Special Master Kenneth R. Feinberg on November 6

JTS explores how the law responds to unique catastrophes, the problems that can arise as the result of victim compensation programs, and ethical considerations surrounding the issue of “Who gets what?” at a public lecture featuring Kenneth R. Feinberg, former special master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. A Bernard G. Segal Memorial Lecture in Law and Ethics, the program will take place on Wednesday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m. Chancellor Arnold Eisen will moderate. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Chancellor Arnold Eisen participated in the roundtable discussion “Training New Rabbis for a New Generation” at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah in the Bronx, New York, on October 6. The panel also featured Rabbi David Ellenson, president of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion; Rabbi Arthur Green, rector of Hebrew College; and Rabbi B. Elka Abrahamson, president of the Wexner Foundation. 

Dr. Zachary Lasker, director of Education Projects for the Melton Research Center for Jewish Education and The Davidson School, and Rabbi Jason Gitlin (RS ’13), project manager of the ReFrame initiative, will teach the online webinar “From Cabin to Classroom: A Case Study in the Bringing of Experiential Methods to the School Setting” tomorrow, October 10, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (EDT). The event is part of the Jewish Educators Assembly Webinar Series 2013. Contact Dr. Louis Nagel to see if registration is still available.

Dr. Vivian B. Mann, director of the master’s program in Jewish Art and Visual Culture, will speak about “Traditionalism in Sephardi Art” at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on October 17. On October 18, she will lecture on the same topic at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minneapolis.

Rabbi Samuel Barth, senior lecturer in Liturgy and Worship, will lecture on “Jewish Music: Sacred and Secular” at Highland Park Conservative Temple in Highland Park, New Jersey, on October 21 at 8:00 p.m. On October 8, 15, and 22, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., he will teach the three-part series Subversive Liturgy at Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn Heights, New York.
