Politics, Polarization, and Economic Uncertainty

American politics have become increasingly polarized in recent decades. To the extent that political polarization introduces uncertainty about economic policy, this pattern may have adversely affected the economy. According to existing theories, a rise in the volatility of fiscal shocks faced by individuals should result in a decline in economic activity. Moreover, if polarization is high around election dates, businesses and households may be induced to delay decisions that involve high reversibility costs (such as investment or hiring under search costs).
Why the Government HIX is Dead as a Dodo
Econintersect: Nearly two weeks ago GEI News recounted what happened when a staff member tried to use the federal healthcare insurance exchange (HIX), HealthCare.gov. The website didn't work. From all reports things have not improved in the intervening time. An investigative report at The Daily Beast is the best summary Econintersect as seen thus far of just what went wrong. How could the same administration that ran two election campaigns with a state-of-the-art website fall so far short on HealthCare.gov?

For some time now, South Korea has boasted the highest average internet connection speed in the world. In the second quarter of 2013, South Korean internet users surfed at an average speed of 13.3 Mbps, 53 percent faster than Americans whose connection speed averaged at 8.7 Mbps.
