All ideological, theological and political debates with the radical Christian right are useless. It cares nothing for rational thought and discussion. Its adherents are using the space within the open society to destroy the open society itself. Our naive attempts to placate a movement bent on our destruction, to prove to it that we too have "values," only strengthen its supposed legitimacy and increase our own weakness.

The people of the world watch in awe and amazement at what is happening in and to America; they are watching as the self-proclaimed greatest democracy in the history of the world is imploding right before their eyes. They see a country that has lost its vision and its stability, weighed down by a government that is no longer capable of governing.

Transforming America's Schools into Authoritarian Instruments of Compliance
Despite a general consensus that zero tolerance policies have failed to have any appreciable impact on student safety, schools have doubled down on these policies to the detriment of children all across the nation.
The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives has the power to end the government shutdown and avoid the U.S. entering into default on October 17. Speaker John Boehner refuses to exercise that power. Why? Who will save us?

Democrats have already made too many concessions. They're right to stand up to the Imperial Congress. But that won't be enough. It's time for the people to take their government back from the extremists, before their empire collapses and takes us all down with it.

Thank a Teabagger
he true obscenity is all this pain and suffering. All these cancer-treatment denials, all these kids kicked off Head Start or baby formula, it's all because a bunch of toddlers in the House want to stomp their little feet and cry about the Affordable Care Act. Even though this government shutdown does NOTHING to advance their lost cause. How does Ted Cruz sleep at night?

If nothing breaks, thuggish House rubes trump the Senate, the White House, federal agencies, and a growing majority aghast at leaps off the cliff solely to dramatize one's purity. Who let the howling dogs in?

In states where Arnold has operated, the end result is usually that retirement benefits are cut in order to keep financing the corporate subsidies. And in some states like Rhode Island -- and now, possibly California, depending on Arnold's specific ballot initiative language -- reformers additionally press to use some of the remaining pension money to pay newly mandated Wall Street fees for "alternative investments."

American Dystopia
Anyone but the deluded, clueless and/or marginally conscious can see the crisis is being created by the very congress that claims it's Mr. Obama's fault for not being willing to negotiate away a law passed by the congress, tested by the Supreme Court and ratified again by an election of the same president.

Obama Should Say, "My Oath of Office Tells Me, No Concessions to Blackmailers"
A brief speech that casts the Republican tactic as an assault on the American constitutional order, and hence the refusal to negotiate with the hostage-takers as part of the presidential oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
1.61 billion dollar human brain project has started in Europe.

This is part one of a review essay of two books devoted to the subject of the historical Jesus

President Obama, a Constitutional scholar and lawyer knows what time it is. He will absolutely will not allow the Federal Government to default. The Republican extremists know this and are trying to force his hand. He is damned if he does let the government default and he will be damned by using an Executive Order to keep it running.

Can Martha C. Nussbaum Help Save Our Embattled Democracy?
Our American experiment in democratic government is embattled today because the Republicans are up to no good. But Martha C. Nussbaum has just published a timely book about why love matters for political justice. But will conservative Republicans read her book? Probably not. But perhaps Senator Elizabeth Warren and other articulate Democrats will. Her book deserves to be widely read and discussed.
Glenn Beck was incensed over reports of leaked emails that indicated House Speaker John Boehner coordinated with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to exempt Congress from Obamacare, saying, "This is officially my snapping point. I have had it with John Boehner ... I am for hope and change, I am for transparency," Beck said, as he called for linking arms across party lines. "Enough of this Kabuki theater ... This is a nightmare! ... John Boehner and the GOP: they are nothing but lies."

On September 18, hip-hop artist Pavlos Fyssas, a.k.a. Killah P, was stabbed outside a bar in Keratsini, Greece.

Five years after the financial crisis in the United States helped spread a deep global recession, policy makers around the world again fear collateral damage, this time with their nations becoming victims not of Wall Street's excesses but of a political system in Washington that to many foreign eyes no longer seems to be able to function efficiently.

Consider this: a radical, militant organization commits threatening acts which place the United States on security lock-down. Or perhaps they hack into Wall Street's vast, intricate computer network, sending the stock markets and banking system into chaotic panic. Or they make hostile demands which, if not met, could bring down our financial system and the global economy. We'd unequivocally label these acts terrorism. So why shouldn't we consider the Republican Party's similar acts of extortion of the past week terrorism? These traitorous rebels are holding Boehner hostage as well. They've strapped him behind the wheel of the GOP crazy-bus, on Cruz Control, and sent him driving the party off a cliff.

Despite what the president says, he has the power to avoid a debt default.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia got a lot of attention for his colorful interview with New York magazine on Sunday. While most of his claims were as real as it gets -- including the notion that he may have gay friends -- The Huffington Post found a few holes.

Making the rounds of TV news shows Sunday, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said failure to raise the US debt limit means 'credit markets could freeze, the value of the dollar could plummet, US interest rates could skyrocket.'

Government workers form the human infrastructure that underpins a great deal of what is good and necessary in the American experiment. We the people care for one another, we take on great challenges, we achieve great things, and we do this by forming a more perfect union and asking some of our fellow citizens to do perform the tasks that are necessary to its maintenance.

When Charlie Rose pounded Netanyahu for his defense of the indefensible settlements, he was speaking for the vast majority of American Jews who do not think the settlements are "helpful to Israel's security." Change is in the air. In a touch of diplomatic irony, history will record that the word "change," in this current moment, originated with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

How is it that Ted Cruz, a freshman Senator from Texas, is able to call the shots in both houses of congress? Perhaps we are seeing a surface fracture caused by a much deeper rift in power structure behind American politics. Follow the money!

After 9/11, the excuse for missing clues was too much data -- trying to sip from a fire hose -- but with the priority now excusing NSA spying, the metaphor is for more data -- you can't find a needle in a haystack without a haystack. Twelve years after 9/11, it's time to stop using it to justify illegal and counterproductive policies.

On Tuesday SCOTUS is to hear arguments in McCutcheon v FEC, a case calling for lifting spending limits by individuals to candidates & political parties during an election cycle. If approved by the Court as was done w/ Citizens United in 2010 where corporate donations savaged the electoral process in its favor it would mean another potential money bonanza to the Republican & Democrat stooges inhabiting the halls of Congress.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel tried to take his campaign against the Iranian leadership to Iran's young population last week, saying that if they were truly free, they would be able to wear jeans, listen to Western music and participate in free elections. The problem is that Iranians do wear jeans and manage to listen to whatever music they want to listen to, just like people almost anywhere, except maybe in North Korea.

Written by a Princeton historian, this article proves that YES HE (Obama) CAN! save the world from a US default, according to the 14th Amendment.

Shutting down the government is really just the beginning when it comes to Republicans' efforts to sabotage the economy. With less than two weeks to go before an unprecedented default on our obligations, Republicans are digging in and threatening a global economic calamity that could be even worse than the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent economic collapse.

Bernie Buzz: Who's Behind the Government Shutdown?
Bernie Buzz: Who's Behind the Government Shutdown? Charles and David Koch, the oil industry tycoons, have thrown their financial weight behind the right-wing Tea Party extremists who forced the government to close. In Senate speeches, Bernie tied the shutdown to the Kochs and other billionaires bankrolling the attempt to undo the Affordable Care Act. The New York Times echoed Bernie's point in a Sunday exposé on how the Koch brothers "have been deeply involved with financing the overall effort." But defunding the health care law is just the beginning. They also support a right-wing extremist agenda to undo virtually every major piece of legislation passed in the last 80 years to protect the middle class, the elderly, the sick, and the poor. On the seventh day of the shutdown, Bernie assessed the situation in an interview on MSNBC. ALSO on this link so much info on major issues...
A single-payer system, like Medicare, is the cure for America's ailing healthcare - Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont
A single-payer system, like Medicare, is the cure for America's ailing healthcare - Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. He says: "I start my approach to healthcare from two very basic premises. First, healthcare must be recognized as a right, not a privilege. Every man, woman and child in our country should be able to access the healthcare they need regardless of their income. Second, we must create a national healthcare system that provides quality healthcare for all in the most cost-effective way possible. Tragically, the United States is failing in both areas. It is unconscionable that in one of the most advanced nations in the world, there are nearly 50 million people who lack health insurance and millions more who have burdensome co-payments and deductibles. In fact, some 45,000 Americans die each year because they do not get to a doctor when they should.... read more
To watch John Boehner speak Sunday--in a segment with ABC's George Stephanopoulos--was to watch him issue talking points from another dimension, where legislative hostage-taking is routine and the American public is eager to threaten the full faith and credit of the United States. The interview was rife with dishonesty, but there were five statements--in particular--that stood out for their recklessness and/or brazen disregard for the truth.
