Belarusian Activists Fined For T-Shirts The activists were arrested on September 28 after participating in a marathon in Minsk while wearing T-shirts bearing the likeness of Mikalay Statkevich, a former presidential candidate who is currently in jail. More Jailed Belarusian rights activist Ales Byalyatski has won the first Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize for his "tireless work to uphold the rights of citizens" in the country. More Daniel Baer is the new U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). During the organization's annual human dimension implementation meeting in Warsaw, Baer sat down with RFE/RL's Rikard to talk about the upcoming elections in Azerbaijan, the situation in Belarus and what he, as one of very few openly gay American ambassadors, thinks about the latest developments in Russia. More An opposition activist in Belarus has been arrested after staging an unusual antigovernment protest in Minsk using the heads of dead pigs. More Russia May Bar Moldovan Workers An estimated 200,000 Moldovan nationals will not be able to travel to Russia for seasonal labor under new regulations. More Ukraine Starts Last Mandatory Draft The last mandatory drafting of conscripts into the Ukrainian armed forces is under way. The Defense Ministry announced on October 1 that by the end of 2014 the Ukrainian armed forces will be comprised of soldiers serving on contracts only. More Playing rough with its neighbors is nothing new for Russia. Moscow has been doing this almost from the moment the Soviet Union broke up. What is different now is that the neighbors are pushing back -- with an assist from Europe. More New York's Eliot Engel, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee in the U.S. Congress, says Washington "should not countenance" an apparent increase in Russian pressure on its neighbors as they seek closer ties with the European Union.
