According to a news release from the University of Exeter, scientists have found massive ice channels beneath a floating Antarctic ice shelf. The scientists note that at 250 meters high, the channels are nearly as tall as France’s Eiffel tower and expand for hundreds of kilometers along the ice shelf.
According to the scientists, the channels are likely to impact the durability of the ice shelf and their finding will assist researchers in their quest to learn more about how the ice will react to altering environmental conditions in the coming years.
Scientists from the University of Exeter, Newcastle University, the University of Bristol, the University of Edinburgh, the British Antarctic Survey and the University of York, utilized satellite pictures and airborne radar data to discover the channels under the ice shelf. The channels can be spotted on the surface of the ice shelf, as well as underneath, due to the fact that ice floats at a varying height based on its thickness.
The scientists forecasted the course of meltwater moving under the part of the ice making contact with the land – called the ice sheet. They found that the forecasted flow courses lined up with the channels under the ice shelf at the point where the ice begins to float.
The match-up suggests that the water movement beneath the grounded ice sheet is responsible for the development of the channels beneath the floating ice shelf. When the meltwater moving under the ice sheet invades the ocean beneath the ice shelf, it forces a plume of ocean water to develop, which then melts out the massive channels under the ice shelf.

National Park Service officials cited the government shutdown as the reason for ordering an elderly Nevada couple out of their home, which sits on federal land. “Unfortunately overnight stays are not permitted until a budget is passed and the park can reopen,” an NPS spokesman explained to KTNV.
Ralph and Joyce Spencer, aged 80 and 77, respectively, own their home, but the government owns the land on which it sits. “I had to be sure and get his walker and his scooter that he has to go in,” Joyce Spencer told the local news outlet.
“We’re not hurt in any way except it might cost me if I have to go buy more pants.”
Similarly, the NPS forced privately-operated inns on the Blue Ridge Parkway to close during the shut down.
“We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can,” an unnamed park ranger told the Washington Times. “It’s disgusting.”

Earlier this week, USA Today reported that massive payment processor MasterCard had joined the FIDO alliance. FIDO is an acronym for Fast IDentity Online, and the group describes itself as:
The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance is a 501(c)6 non-profit organization nominally formed in July 2012 to address the lack of interoperability among strong authentication devices as well as the problems users face with creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. The FIDO Alliance plans to change the nature of authentication by developing specifications that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms that supplant reliance on passwords to securely authenticate users of online services. This new standard for security devices and browser plugins will allow any website or cloud application to interface with a broad variety of existing and future FIDO-enabled devices that the user has for online security.
USA Today reports that:
SAN FRANCISCO — MasterCard is joining the FIDO Alliance, signaling that the payment network is getting interested in using fingerprints and other biometric data to identify people for online payments.
MasterCard will be the first major payment network to join FIDO. The Alliance is developing an open industry standard for biometric data such as fingerprints to be used for identification online. The goal is to replace clunky passwords and take friction out of logging on and purchasing using mobile devices.
It’s for your own good, and it’ll probably fight terrorism too!
Apple’s new iPhone 5s smartphone has a fingerprint sensor, but the tech giant is not part of FIDO. However, Google is part of the Alliance, and devices running Google’s Android operating system will have fingerprint sensors by next year.
I’m sure the folks at the Department of Homeland Security will be more than happy that the financial giant will make mass collection under its Biometric Optical Surveillance System (BOSS) that much easier. Serfs up suckers!

Sochi, venue for 2014 Winter OlympicsShaun Walker
The Guardian
Athletes and spectators attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February will face some of the most invasive and systematic spying and surveillance in the history of the Games, documents shared with the Guardian show.
Russia’s powerful FSB security service plans to ensure that no communication by competitors or spectators goes unmonitored during the event, according to a dossier compiled by a team of Russian investigative journalists looking into preparations for the 2014 Games.
In a ceremony on Red Square on Sunday afternoon, the president, Vladimir Putin, held the Olympic flame aloft and sent it on its epic journey around the country, saying Russia and its people had always been imbued with the qualities of “openness and friendship”, making Sochi the perfect destination for the Olympics.

131006_Sandy_Hook_VoteIt’s been 10 months since the sandy hook tragedy and residents in Newtown are getting ready to rebuild.
A referendum was passed Sunday to demolish the old Sandy Hook Elementary School and build a new one in its place.
Twenty-six people, including 20 students, were killed last December in a mass shooting at the school.
Saying yes to the state’s grant of $50 million won’t erase that memory but many believe it’ll help them heal and move forward.
“I believe the town needs it to heal and to go forward and it always has to be there so we keep this event in our minds and go forward from here and keeping these children and administrators in our hearts always,” Yvonne Grimes said.
