Russia: Do not close investigation into Natalia Estemirova’s death until real perpetrators found

ARTICLE 19 commemorates the fourth anniversary of Natalia Estemirova’s death. On 15 July 2009, human rights defender Natalia Estemirova was kidnapped outside her home in Grozny, Chechnya, and found brutally murdered in the neighbouring republic of Ingushetia. To date no one has been brought to justice and ARTICLE 19 expresses its concern that the criminal investigation into her death is to be closed shortly. Read more >

Azerbaijan: Three youth activists sentenced and four detained ahead of presidential election

The sentencing of three Azerbaijani youth activists on 15 July to 15 days administrative detention is politically motivated and follow more than a dozen arrests of other opposition activists in Azerbaijan in recent months. France: ARTICLE 19 welcomes repeal of HADOPI law but concerns remain

ARTICLE 19 welcomes France’s repeal last week of a law that legalised the internet disconnection of copyright infringers. This move is in line with France’s international obligations to respect freedom of expression, as well as ARTICLE 19’s Right to Share principles. However, ARTICLE 19 remains concerned over the fines of up to 1,500 euros (US$2,000) that can still be imposed against those who infringe copyright. Read more >

ARTICLE 19 urges the Kazakhstan Supreme Court when reviewing the appeal of Vladimir Kozlov this July to recognise that his case concerns the right to freedom of expression.
