If you support Edward Snowden, if you think he's a hero, AND you are rooting for Hillary in 2016, or you know someone who is, take a look at Mica Sifrey's article, Reading Hillary Clinton on Internet Freedom and Edward Snowden.
It's an eye opener.
And if you're focusing on the Obama
administration's arguments that the NSA spying is about national
security-- that we have a choice between being safe from terrorists or
keeping our fourth amendment rights to privacy-- check out Martin
Cohen's article, NSA spying - another side of the story-- Data Privatized For Corporate Use.
The USA government-- the Obama
administration in particular, should change its logo from an eagle
soaring high to the Wizard of Oz-- telling Dorothy and company to ignore
the man behind the curtain.
And part of the mission of Opednews
is to keep the focus on the real players, the real motivations that
drive the events that make the news.
Reid Mukai's article, From the Arab Spring to a Global Summer.
offers much hope that we are indeed
facing a new world that the top down old powers may not be able to stop
from evolving, even with all their accretions of money and power.

Europe
is furious at private and business communications being routinely
scanned and read by an anglophone spy network run by the US government.
But the debate so far has been about the balance between public security
and private life. The real story is about economic warfare.
In
the wake of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden's revelations, Micah Sifry
wonders, what, if anything, is left of Hillary Clinton's "Internet
Freedom" agenda. The answer is not much.

From the Arab Spring to a Global Summer Continuation of neoliberal policies and the spread of communications technology have boosted the momentum of the types of mass protests that emerged during the 2011 Arab Spring.

Prescott AZ Honors Hotshot Firefighters Who Perished in Yarnell Hills Blaze: UPDATED 11 pm PDT
Flags
lowered to half-staff and makeshift memorials sprung up in Prescott, AZ
since Sunday when 19 firefighters of the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew
lost their lives in the Yarnell Hill fire.
Article examines government attacks against lesser-known whistleblowers.
Some
"libertarians" accept the global-warming science but still can't bring
themselves to recognize that a coordinated government response is
needed. Anti-government ideology trumps even the possible destruction of
life on the planet, a very real possibility given the likelihood of
mass dislocations of populations and the availability of nuclear
weapons.
At
its best, the "metadata" aggregation, including the logs of all email
traffic and telephone calls, is a paranoid assault on our right to
personal space enshrined in the Fourth Amendment. At worst it is an out
of control grab for worldwide power over the new information age.
As
we all know the GOP is demographically doomed, and that their efforts
at outreach to minority constituents are pathetic and laughable.
Shortly
before Election Day last year, mailers went out to Texas voters
featuring pictures of a Democratic congressional candidate and a rare
species of spider, whose discovery had forced stoppage of an important
highway construction project.
By
now the entire world must know that Washington is not merely lawless,
but also totally out of control, reveling in arrogance and hubris,
driven by desires for hegemony over the entire world. Washington is so
paranoid and distrustful that it doesn't even trust its own citizens or
the European puppet governments that it has bought and paid for.

Karibu (Welcome) To Tanzania, President Obama: While the Visit To Promote Big Power Closed The City Down, A Dynamic Film Festival Showcases The Country's Cultural Energy And Opens Minds
The
President said he is not going to approve the Keystone XL pipeline if
it harms the climate because doing so would not serve the national
interest. I applaud him on this and I know tens of thousands of other do
as well. We know that we cannot fully address climate change while
facilitating expansion of the tar sands. That's why the Keystone XL tar
sands pipeline is a bad idea.
HONG
KONG -- This is Asia's Gotham City. And the people of Gotham have had
enough. They want real democracy, one person, one vote. As for the
current CEO of Gotham, Leung Chun-ying, aka C Y Leung, aka The Joker, he
is no more than, well, a joke.
Cancer
immunotherapy with GcMAF is highly effective against cancer, with no
adverse effects. Instead of wasting billions on "the War Against
Cancer" started by Nixon in the 1970's, the NIH should instead give the
highest priority to funding research on Dr, Yamamoto's GcMAF cancer
immunotherapy.
Shortly
after 50,000 bees were found dead in an Oregon parking lot (read more
here), a staggering 37 million bees have been found dead in Elmwood,
Ontario, Canada. Dave Schuit, who runs a honey operation in Elmwood has
lost 600 hives. He is pointing the finger at the insecticides known as
neonicotinoids, which are manufactured by Bayer CropScience Inc. This
also comes after a recent report released by the British Beekeepers
Association (BBKA) that recorded its largest loss of honeybees ever.

Chaos in Middle East Grows as the U.S. Focuses on Israel - By MARK LANDLER and JODI RUDOREN NYTimes.com
This was the copy under the headline: "As protests roil the Middle East, Secretary of State John Kerry's focus on talks between the Israelis and Palestinians has raised questions about the administration's priorities."

There's
an old saying that a reporter is only as good as his sources, meaning
that there's a need for people inside government who see wrongdoing to
speak up. It is also a test of a democratic Republic whether
truth-tellers like Edward Snowden are appreciated or persecuted,
ex-intelligence analyst Elizabeth Murray notes.
The
Obama administration said Tuesday it would delay for a year the
Affordable Care Act mandate that employers provide coverage for their
workers or pay penalties.
According
to the reports, first detailed by the German news magazine Der Spiegel,
the U.S. National Security Agency is monitoring 500 million German
communications each month and has classified Germany as a target on a
level with China and Saudi Arabia. The United States also allegedly is
bugging European Union offices, monitoring EU communications, and
scooping up the emails and phone calls of EU nations' citizens.
The
US director of national intelligence, James Clapper, has attempted to
head off criticism that he lied to Congress over the extent of
government surveillance on American citizens, with a letter to senators
in which he apologized for giving "erroneous" information. Yet the
intelligence chief only corrected the record on 21 June, when
disclosures by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden prompted weeks
of intense public pressure.
Supreme
Court justices are appointed for life in order to ensure their
independence from politics. But when it comes to the core political
strategy of the Republican Party, the five Republican appointees are, in
effect, an extension of the GOP.

The White House Theater of the Absurd The Obama White House has now agreed to delay full implementation of its own Affordable Care Act for another year, all to placate some employers who continue to deny decent health care to their workers. That is an unconscionable and shameful action by the White House staff and our President.
Ohio's
sneaky passage of radical anti-abortion legislation today (buried in a
budget bill) is the latest attempt at the age-old tradition of
chest-thumping, rattle-shaking, knuckle-dragging male dominance over the
mysterious, frightening magic of female fertility. Once again, a group
of white men are deciding what they will allow women to do with their
bodies. Isn't this getting a bit old?

The
NSA spying on Europe is causing widespread and growing anger among

Where
are the momentous, consciousness-raising boycotts of yesteryear that
rose up against injustice, bigotry, or plain stupidity, to advance
legal, civil and workers' rights? Once upon a time high-profile uproars,
some lasting years, brought down presidents, ended major wars, and
remade national American priorities and values.

Atheist Religions
Asking whether atheism is a religion ignores more important questions. Atheism is no more a religion than theism. Both are religious opinions on the existence of "God." What makes a theistic or atheistic worldview into a religion is the content that comes with it. On that premise, we might think of the "New Atheists" as religious.
It Is Time For The International Security Outrage To Be Investigated and Stopped
It is obviously outrageous that the three branches of U.S. federal government have failed to protect its citizens, and foreign citizens, as well as their countries, from what, in principal, is illegal seizure of sensitive and private information. It is again obviously outrageous that without publicly announcing any intention to investigate other obvious government officials or government contractors for alleged violations.

A Special Farmer Named Jack
James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small was a wonderful book to read. Now I found an excerpt from a second book - The Lord God Made Them All - where he in one part tells the story of Jack the Farmer who loved and cared for his animals much as he did his own family. Truly an amazing, loving man.
