The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has started a procedure against two former CEOs of the Bulgarian National Electric Company NEK over the controversial project for a second Bulgarian nuclear power plant in Belene.

Bulgaria's jobless rate in will continue to increase in 2012 as the economy hovers on the brink of its second recession in three years in the wake of the slump in the euro zone, analysts have warned.

Chinese investors are interested in the concession of Bulgaria's largest Black Sea port, Port Varna, announced China's Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Guo Yezhou.

BULGARIA BANK SYSTEM BAD LOANS HIT RECORD HIGH
Bulgarian bad and restructured loans rose to the record high 23,35% of total lending at the end of March, amounting to BGN 9.7 B, shows central bank data, leaked to the media.
The bad and restructured loans increased by 4.25% on a monthly and 27.3% on an annual basis. In absolute terms the monthly increase is BGN 394 M, the second largest since April 2010 when it was BGN 424 M. read more

BULGARIA TO BOOST ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF SMES WITH EU MONEY
A total of EUR 150 M has been provided under the Competitiveness Operational Program for boosting the energy efficiency of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, according to Economy and Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev.
Speaking at the Green Energy Forum, Dobrev presented Wednesday the scheme under the Competitiveness OP, stressing that the project was entirely new for Bulgaria. read more

BULGARIA TO BOOST ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT
A program called "Energy Efficiency and Green Economy" that was presented Wednesday at the Ministry of Transport envisages increasing the number of trolleybuses in big cities and introducing hybrid buses and 100% electric buses.
Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski expressed the state's support for other initiatives like boosting the energy efficiency of public transport by improving the vehicle fleet, by using cleaner vehicles, including "green" electric taxis, and by more eco-driving. read more

ZULU KING CANCELS BULGARIAN VISIT
Zulu King, His Majesty Goodwill Zwelithini, has cancelled his planned visit to Bulgaria, the South African Embassy in Sofia has announced.
King Goodwill Zwelithini was planned to be coming to Bulgaria to officiate at the week of South African Culture – May 7-11, 2012, with Bulgaria's Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov having agreed to host the Zulu King, and having announced his visit last month. read more

Countries that refused to open up their labor markets to Bulgarian and Romanian nationals in 2012 will have to submit their motives with the European Commission by end-May.
Nine EU countries decided to take advantage of the maximum period (December 31, 2013) to keep labor market restrictions for citizens of the EU's two newest members, citing the crisis as a motive. read more

BULGARIA UPS HIGHWAY SPEED LIMIT IN CONTROVERSIAL MOVE
Bulgaria's MPs have approved at first reading proposed legislative amendments that allow the country's highway speed limit to grow from 130 km/h to 140 km/h (87 mph).
"We want to increase the speed limit because of the new highways under construction and the new, high quality roads. The existing restrictions will remain in the risky road sections," explained Regional Development Minister Liliana Pavlova. read more

BULGARIAN AUTHORITIES SEIZE 6.2 KM OF ILLEGAL FISHING NETS IN 3 DAYS
Four kilometers of poachers' nets have been seized during an inspection of Lake Vaya near the Black Sea city Burgas, according to Yancho Yanchev, head of the local office of the Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture (EAFA).
The fish caught in the illegal nets has been returned to the lake and the authorities have issued a statement of offence against and unknown offender. read more

REGIONAL DEA OFFICE IN BULGARIA BOAST 1ST SUCCESSFUL COOPERATION
Officers of the Chief Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP) have busted an international drug trafficking ring.
The joint operation conducted by officers of the local GDBOP unit and police officers from the southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv resulted in the arrest of eight suspected of trafficking heroin and synthetic drugs on the route Turkey-Bulgaria-Kosovo-Italy-Switzerland. read more

SPAIN BUSTS IRAN-UK PEOPLE-SMUGGLING GANG, NABS BULGARIANS
Spanish police have arrested 22 people, including Bulgarians, who were allegedly part of a ring that smuggled people from Iran to Britain, often via Spain's Canary Islands.
Once in the Canaries, usually the islands of Tenerife or Fuerteventura, they would fly to Britain, police said, as cited by BBC. read more
