Syria: Continued secret detention of Mazen Darwish and other human
rights activists and prosecution of part of SCM staff before military
court
The undersigned organizations strongly condemn the ongoing secret
detention of Mr. Mazen Darwish, President of the Syrian Center for Media
and Freedom of Expression (SCM), and four of his colleagues, more than
65 days after they were arrested in violation of domestic and
international law. The organizations also express their deepest concern
for the criminal procedure triggered by the Military Prosecutor of
Damascus against seven human rights activists working with the SCM and
one visitor.

Kazakhstan: Prominent journalist stabbed and shot in suspicious circumstances
Uralskaya nedelya journalist, Lukpan Akhmedyarov was attacked
by a group of three men on the night of April 19-20 near the porch of
his house. Akhmedyarov is known for his criticism of the government and
participation in protests.

JOINT STATEMENT
ACHPR should advance right to information in Africa
The African Platform on Access to Information (APAI) calls on the
African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to advance the right to
access to information on the African continent. The APAI, an
intercontinental initiative to promote access to Information on the
continent, took the campaign a step further in its address to the 51st
session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Council of Europe: Search engine recommendation risks serious infringement of free expression
On 4 April 2012, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe
adopted two Recommendations: (1) Recommendation CM/Rec(2012)3 on the
protection of human rights with regard to search engines and (2)
Recommendation CM/Rec(2012)4 on the protection of human rights with
regard to social networking services. The Council of Europe has stated
that these Recommendations address the risks that search engines and
social networking sites pose to human rights and fundamental freedoms,
particularly the right to freedom of expression and information and the
right to respect for private and family life, enshrined in Articles 10
and 8, respectively, of the Convention for the Protection of Human
Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
