Italy: Defamation must be decriminalised
ARTICLE 19 analyses Italy's defamation law which is currently tabled for review by the Senate, for its compliance with international freedom of expression standards. The law, adopted by the Chamber of Deputies on 17 October 2013, introduces amendments to several laws dealing with civil and criminal defamation.

Regional Forum: Protection of Civic Space for Journalists and Human Rights Defenders
The Regional Forum on the “Protection of Civic Space for Journalists and Human Rights Defenders” was held in Bamako from 20 to 21 November 2013. The forum’s principal objective was to reflect on the way and means of implementing efficient mechanisms to guarantee freedom of expression for journalists and human rights defenders, and more broadly, for all citizens.

Marco Civil debate postponed… again
The Marco Civil has been on the agenda of the Chamber of Representatives since 28 October 2013. A surge of calls for a free and democratic internet have begun ever since in Brasilia, spreading rapidly across social networks. After several months of discussion, parliamentary leaders have decided to postpone the vote for the Marco Civil for the third time, frustrating efforts for a free internet.
