Turkmenistan Admits Blast Deaths
Turkmenistan says two servicemen and 13 civilians died in a series of blasts last week in a town 20 kilometers from the capital, Ashgabat. More When Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev seeks advice, he heads to the woods -- and the trees tell him how to deal with everyday issues and even how to handle his friends and foes. No, it doesn't necessarily mean that the Kazakh president has lost touch with reality. More Uzbek comedian Obid Asomov is a household name in the former Soviet states due to his role in the popular Russian satirical serial "Krivoe Zerkalo" (Distorted Mirror). But the comedian is essentially blacklisted in his native Uzbekistan. Asomov says he has an idea why. More Critics of the decision to send Kyrgyz youths to a Kremlin-sponsored international youth forum say "Seliger" is being used by Moscow to indoctrinate young people with pro-Russian propaganda. More In recent years the number of schools in Kazakhstan offering Kazakh-language curriculum has seen a slow but steady rise. This means that some students accustomed to studying in Russian must find a new place to hang their book bags. More Language is a sensitive topic in Kyrgyzstan, as the country's interim president Roza Otunbaeva mentioned recently, when she publicly backed promoting the development of the state language, Kyrgyz. More Alimzhan Tokhtakhunov, aka "Taivanchik" (Little Taiwanese), is reputedly one of the most powerful figures in Russian organized crime, an allegation he strenuously denies. He is the subject of an Interpol arrest warrant based on U.S. charges of fraud and trafficking in weapons and drugs, and has been accused of trying to fix the figure-skating competition of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. More It's been 90 years since the Soviet authorities banned polygamy in Central Asia. Passenger On Rescue Boat Recounts Volga River Tragedy Russia has declared July 12 a day of mourning after more than 100 people, including many children, drowned when their overcrowded cruise boat sank in the Volga River. Raynur Shakir of RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service spoke to a passenger on another river boat that was among the first to help survivors escape the scene.
